How to choose skincare products

Choosing a good skincare product can be difficult because you can find every type of product imaginable on the market. There are products for dry skin, combination skin, for sensitive skin, wrinkles, acne, for toning, moisturising, to lighten skin, etc…

Given such a wide variety, how do we know what product to choose that is going to treat both our skin and our purses well?

Here are the rules to follow:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR SKIN TYPE

Every type of skin has its own particular characteristics and its problems that must be treated with specific products.  Getting it wrong could worsen the situation.

As a result, cosmetic products must be carefully selected in order to improve appearance as far as possible.

2. CAREFULLY EVALUATE

It is always advisable before buying a product to obtain all the information about it and to ensure it is really appropriate for us.

It is also useful to examine the label and the list of ingredients.

3. EXPENSIVE DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN EFFECTIVE

It is the ingredients of a product, not its price, that determines its effectiveness.

It is important not to be misled by the cost and making the assumption that luxury products perhaps contain miraculous ingredients. Some ingredients simply work better than others and these can be used by any cosmetics house. So after having identified the active ingredients that work best for you, look for products that contain them.

4. ASK FOR A SAMPLE

Sometimes, even after carefully selecting the product that seems more suited to our needs, it may not fulfil our expectations. This is because we all have very different skin types and as such our skin will react differently to the same formulation. As such, it is always good to request a sample (when possible).

5. LET'S PUT THEM TO THE TEST!

It is always better to try a new product for about a month before deciding whether it is benefiting our skin.

In some cases however just a few days will be sufficient. For example, it only takes a few applications to understand if we are happy with the texture of a product or if instead it is too rich for our skin or if it takes too long to adsorb. In addition specific treatments against acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and other specific conditions of the skin should produce some small improvement within 3 weeks, even if it is going to take much longer to completely resolve the problem.

6. NEVER STOP LEARNING

Cosmetic research has made great strides in recent decades and scientists are always looking for new ingredients with which to solve our skin problems. For this reason it is important to keep up with research.

Only in this way can we discover what ingredients are worth trying and which have no relevance for us.

In addition, the study of this discipline will help us to understand which ingredients should not be mixed together, what mechanism is most effective to facilitate their penetration into the skin, which are safest, in what concentrations they are most effective and lots of other information to help us select the products that work best for our skin.
